Who we are
What is Becoming Free Indeed?
Becoming Free Indeed is a Christ-centred ministry in Kampala, Uganda, founded by Pastor John Mugabi.
After 20 years of struggling with pornography, John found freedom in Christ. Today he is a pastor, mentor, husband and father who walks with young people, and the parents, teachers and leaders around them, on the same road to freedom.
We focus on addictions, mental health, sexual integrity, and sexual and reproductive health: the pressures young people often face unseen and unspoken.
This is not about trying harder. It is about telling the truth, receiving grace and learning new patterns.

What is Becoming Free Indeed?
Becoming Free Indeed (also written BecomingFreeIndeed, at becomingfreeindeed.com) is a Christ-centred ministry in Kampala, Uganda, founded by Pastor John Mugabi. It helps young people aged 12 to 35 overcome porn, lust and other addictions and live free, whole and purposeful, through the FreeIndeed Podcast, an 8-session Mentorship Space, school partnerships, counselling and John's book, Free Indeed.
Is it for boys and girls?
Yes. We work with young men and young women, and with the parents, teachers, peer educators and youth leaders who walk alongside them.
Is it confidential?
Yes. Conversations are private. The Mentorship Space is a small, closed group on Zoom, and our school sessions are age-appropriate and non-graphic.
How much does it cost?
The FreeIndeed Podcast is free to watch, and the school Awareness Visit (1 to 2 hours) is free. For counselling, the Mentorship Space and other programmes, send us a message and we will explain the options.
How do I get the book Free Indeed?
You can buy the e-book on Selar, or order a hard copy anywhere in Uganda: pay with Mobile Money and collect it at your nearest bus terminal within 2 days. An Amazon edition is coming soon.
How can a young person stop watching pornography?
Freedom is possible. It starts with honesty, not perfection. John Mugabi struggled with pornography for 20 years before finding freedom in Christ. Through the book Free Indeed, the private 8-session Mentorship Space on Zoom and confidential counselling, we walk with young people step by step, without shame or judgement.
Do you help with alcohol, drug and other addictions?
Yes. We address substance and behavioural addictions, including pornography, lust, alcohol and drug use, through mentorship, counselling, school sessions and the FreeIndeed Podcast. We are a Christ-centred ministry, not a medical clinic, so where medical care is needed we encourage involving a doctor as well.
Do you support young people struggling with anxiety, stress, shame or loneliness?
Yes. Mental health and emotional distress are one of our four focus areas. We offer a listening ear, prayer, mentorship and practical tools, and we encourage professional medical help alongside where that is needed.
Do you speak to schools about peer pressure and sexual and reproductive health?
Yes. Our school visits give honest, age-appropriate and non-graphic guidance on sexual integrity, peer pressure, healthy boundaries and sexual and reproductive health. A free 1 to 2 hour awareness visit is the usual first step for primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.
Can you speak at our church, school, university or workplace?
Yes. John speaks at churches, schools, universities, conferences and workplaces across Uganda. Use the booking form or message us on WhatsApp and we will reply within 24 hours.
Is this the same as the book "Becoming Free Indeed" by Jinger Duggar Vuolo?
No. That is a 2023 memoir by an American author. Becoming Free Indeed (becomingfreeindeed.com) is a separate ministry in Uganda founded by Pastor John Mugabi, and John's own book is titled Free Indeed.
Where are you based?
We are based in Kampala, Uganda. We visit schools, campuses and churches, and the Mentorship Space meets online on Zoom, so you can join from anywhere.
